US Navy Fighter Squadron VF-114 was established on January 20th, 1945 at NAS Alameda, California, flying the F6F Hellcat. The squadron transitioned to the F9F Panther and then the F4D Skyray and F3H Demon during the 1950s at their new home at NAS North Island. In 1961, the squadron transitioned to the F-4B Phantom and then finally to the F-14A Tomcat in 1975. VF-114 was disestablished during a ceromony at NAS Mirimar on April 30, 1993.
During the F-4 Phantom years, squadrom members thought the Phantom resembled the cominc strip charachter "Aardvark" and lobbied to change the mascot. They were successful and one of the most unusual tail art shemes was born.
BuNo was lost 8 July 1991 went the aircraft went into the sea near Sri Lanka. Both crew ejected safely.
