Dragon’s newest venture into space models encompasses the famous Hubble Space Telescope (HST) and the Space Shuttle Discovery. This space shuttle blasted off from the Kennedy Space Center on 11 February 1997 on STS-82, a servicing mission. The HST, this vital space-probing piece of astronomical equipment, underwent servicing by crewmen of the Discovery. This was the second servicing mission for this high-tech telescope that was placed in orbit in 1990. The maintenance significantly upgraded the HST’s capabilities with new apparatus like the new Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (STIS) and Near Infrared Camera and Multi-Object Spectrometer (NICMOS). The work carried out by the Discovery’s crew ensured the HST could operate until the next scheduled servicing in 1999. The mission involved five spacewalks, where the crew used up to 150 different tools or instruments at various stages. Space Shuttle Discovery returned to Earth ten days later after the successful completion of this mission.-
The Challenger launched on its first voyage in 1983. It completed the mission of first spacewalk of the Space Shuttle program and was the first satellite in the Tracking and Data Relay System constellation. It was the first orbiter to launch and land at night on mission STS-8 and Challenger was the first to carry two U.S. female astronauts on mission STS 41-G. It made the first Space Shuttle landing at Kennedy Space Center. After nine successful missions, the Challenger launched on STS-51L on January 28, 1986. 73 seconds into the mission, the Challenger exploded. The loss of Challenger did not negate the work of NASA but encouraged it to continue to better mankind in space flight and in life on Earth.
Dragon brings its model kit and diecast expertise to the Space series in introducing the new 1:400 Space Shuttle Challenger with Shuttle Bay Doors and Interior Payload Details.
